Nancy J Adler-Reality in Translation

A picture is worth a thousand words…
Perhaps the most high profile supporter of the use of art in the development of business leaders is to be found at the Desautels faculty at McGill University in the person of Dr. Nancy Adler. Adler's day job is teaching at McGill. And helping major international corporations such as Rio Tinto and the Business Families Foundation with cross-cultural management issues…

In the midst of chaos, how do we see beauty? Surrounded by turbulence, how do we discover simplicity? Living together on one planet, how do we simultaneously celebrate our collective humanity and the unique resonance of our individual voices? Given the power of analytic understanding—driven as it is to claim life as knowable—how do we re-recognize the unknown and unknowable? How do we surrender to the humility it takes to stand in awe of life’s mysteries?  Where do we stand when we stand in awe?

Allowing a painting to be born is to stand in awe of one of life’s most beautiful mysteries. Invited by the blank paper, the best of my intentions and experience enter into a dance with uncontrollable coincidence. Neither the process nor the resulting art are ever completely defined. Which way will the colors run? What surprises will the ink reveal as it, ever so gently, touches the paint? I purposely use primarily water-based media that do not stay where I place them on the paper. There’s never any illusion that I control the process. I only enter the dance; paintings emerge out of the dance. For me, being an artist is about giving birth to the possibilities inherent in mystery. Creation—whether on a canvas of words or visual images—is, in fact, about relearning to dance with God.

Painting outside the bottom line
By, National Post · Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010
Members of the world's largest association of business scholars had kicked off their annual meeting last Friday discussing such topics as the "promises and perils of emerging markets research" and "developing responsible global leaders."
Across the street from the convention centre that housed many of the talks, inside a modern-art gallery, about 50 delegates to the Academy of Management meeting were immersed in an utterly different environment. Participants in conference session 115 were invited to, "Let a painting choose you," as thought-provoking texts were read aloud and an instrumental composition titled Zenscapes played softly.

PICTURE THIS: BRIDGING TWO WORLDS, MCGILL MANAGEMENT PROFESSOR SAYS FINANCE AND CREATIVITY GO TOGETHER Artists and business leaders used to be widely perceived as polar opposites. In today's world, however, the corporate managers most likely to prosper are those who conduct themselves more like artists, innovating and responding quickly to stimulus. That's the contention of McGill University professor Nancy Adler who, in addition to teaching at the Desautels Faculty of Management, is an accomplished painter whose first local solo show will open to the public next month at Galerie MX on Viger St. W. Adler, who'll also be conducting workshops during the annual meeting in Montreal through Tuesday of the Academy of Management (the largest organization in the world devoted to management research and teaching), said one of her objectives as a teacher is "outing the humanity" of her MBA students.

MCGILL'S NANCY ADLER AND THE ART OF MANAGEMENT McGill management prof Nancy Adler teaches with broad strokes - the brush strokes of an artist. Adler, a professor of organizational behavior and international management at McGill's Desautels Faculty of Management, has been painting for the last two decades. More than a decade ago, she began experimenting with ways in which to combine her dual passions to help ignite the creative juices of leaders in business and government.

PUTTING SOME SOUL INTO MANAGEMENT
Nancy Adler, professor, Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University, and an artist herself, says soon the Master of Fine Arts will become a much sought-after business degree because "designing innovative options requires more than the traditional analytical skills taught during the past half century. Rather, it requires skills that creative artists have used for years." As they re-invent the MBA for the 21st century, business schools are going beyond the 'dehydrated' language of management.
